The novel starts off with guns blazing and doesn't slow down for murder, kidnapping, blackmail, sex or sandstorm. Johansen borrows openly from the movies Hollywood thinks women love (Grace talks to horses, though she balks at being called a horse whisperer), crafts family scenes (Marvot playing chess with his son; the Pair with their colt) and offers a mother and father who defend the world from criminals while yearning for domestic tranquillity. I liked the idea of this book. The author is probably the most experienced person to narrate such an exciting story on the high seas. No doubt, there is no-one else in the world with his unique perspective - having seen all the action up close. He also has the insights to present a much higher level view of the conflicts that are occurring in this part of the world.However, I found the flow of the book very difficult to follow. The author quotes many many sources, slipping in and out between the first person (himself) and the many experts that he quotes throughout the book. In places, he obviously cut&paste's an incident report. I found it very confusing to follow. It seemed to get worse as I progressed through the book. So much so, that I stopped at chapter 4.I had no idea who was 'speaking' and the context of the 'stories' throughout seemed to get lost in the action.Nice try - but stick to catching those scurvy pirates rather than writing about them.

I have to confess that the author, Terry McKnight, was a college classmate of mine at VMI, so there's an element of bias in my review.The book offers a first-hand account of an odd chapter of US military history. Unlike many military authors, Terry writes for the civilian audience, offering explanations and definitions of military acronyms and verbage, which keeps the reader focused on the subject matter.Terry left the theater command before the siezure of the Mersk Alabama and subsequent rescue of "Captain Phillips", however, his contacts in the Navy and US government more than adequately served as a basis for an in-depth reporting of the incident.The book offers an insightful look into the inner workings of the US Navy, the US government, the press and the military command infrastructure.

It is pretty clear that the author has some interesting things to write about, but does not know how to get them out.The book jumps from storyteller to storyteller, sometimes multiple times per page.This makes it choppy and kills the flow.The book talks way too much about policy and chains of command. We all know they exist and are cumbersome, but we don't want to read about them.Despite the fact that I really wanted to read this book I gave up halfway through, which is pretty rare for me.There has got to be a better book written on modern piracy.

Bought the book Friday evening and finished it Sunday morning. I have great respect for all service members and their families.

This book tells the real story of how the US Navy and Radm. Terry McKnight met the challenge of piracy off the coast of Somalia. It also relates all the issues that needed to be addressed by State Department and civil rights lawyers, some of which made the task much more difficult and frustrating. It's a terrific read!

I found this book mostly frustrating. Although it did contain some information that I've never encountered anywhere else (such as MPLS and diffserv), the writing style was so off-putting that it was hard to get through the material. The author seems to go out of his way, for example, to use the word "data" as a plural just to show off that he knows that data is a plural word. The sentence "the briefest of summaries if provided forthwith" pops up in the first chapter.That said, I can't think of any competing book I could recommend that covers the same material. Unlike most every other networking book that's been published in the last 20 years or so, this book *doesn't* limit itself to TCP/IP, but covers frame relay and ATM and actually compares and contrasts the different approaches.There's also sort of a "middle part" in chapters 7, 8 and 9 that cover probability, queuing theory and self-similarity. For the most part, these chapters are a waste of space, since they don't get into enough depth to cover the material and aren't really used much in the subsequent material.Also, the exercises at the end of the chapters (all without answers and thus without any means of checking your work) generally can't be completed based on just the material in the chapter itself. In fact, I came across at least one exercise (the "chuck-a-luck" question in chapter 7) whose text was lifted verbatim from one of the chapter's references ("An Introduction to Probability" by Samuel Goldberg - which *does* include answers in the back of the book for self study).So, although the author's research was impeccable, I have to say he really ought to have let somebody else do his writing for him.

A good reference book for a networking guy.Also the author takes you into the basics of socket programming but its only the basics.If you want to delve into this I suggest the one from Richard Stevens

Those who read a lot of non-fiction know that sometimes great long form content like articles and blog posts get expanded into books adding extra non essential material in order to hit a magic number of pages for a publisher. This book feels like that. The book explains great techniques focused on the concept of compassionate communication but you could get the gist of the research and technique searching the web for a long academic journal article. Basically slow down, breathe, relax and be positive in thought and actions with at least 5 to 1 ratio and you will get the 80/20 of compassionate communication.

Page 33: Well, my thoughts....I cannot believe how much knowledge is in the first 33 pages. I knew negativity hurt, but I did not realize it causes brain damage. I feel humbled by the fact that I am changing my mind about negativity and embracing positive notions.Hostile Language can cause brain damage. Thanks Mark Robert Waldman for pointing this out...

It changed me in quiet but meaningful ways. It exposes the thornier aspects of oneâ€™s way of relating to self and the world. What you need to know is all in the first 2-3 chapters, which is not a negative, since it delivers to those who may not have the patience for a whole book, even one as slim as this. But the rest of the chapters detail how to put the principles into practice. And that separates the casual reader from the one who is really committed to change.

This book will change your life--if you practice what it says, which is difficult because habits are so ingrained. Did you know your brain goes into panic when it hears "no?" The age old debate over whether language shapes what we know really doesn't matter because it clearly shapes how our brains function and ultimately affects our psychological and physical well being. This is a book the entire world should read because it paves a path to a more compassionate, understanding, and civilized humanity. Many thanks to Newberg and Waldman for their years of dedicated research. (I also highly recommend How God Changes Your Brain.)

This is not the kind of book one can read and just put away. It requires a lot of practice to see results, total immersion in its teachings, and a lot of personal self-knowledge and reflection. I am still practicing many of its recommendations, and I am very glad that I have this book. I have only one concern, though. It seems to assume that facial and social expressions of emotional states are universal. That has not been my experience. I've lived in this country for more than 50 years, and I am still finding instances of miscommunication due to different cultural assumptions, gestures, mannerisms, etc., that go beyond words. I would love to see a follow up study on those differences, since I know that they run very deep, are very much unconscious, and in a pluralistic society such as ours, they can create a lot of miscommunication. For example, I recently attended a memorial service for a friend. Her family was there, as well as a large number of friends. I became very aware of feeling a very uncomfortable sense of coldness, especially when I people praise the strength of the family. I realized I was operating from a different cultural milieu, where we expect grief to be out in the open, and out of conscious control. I had to change my cultural filters in order to understand their frame of mind and not let my own deep-seated values create the wrong impression on my mind. A book on those issues would be very interesting and would complement this one very well.

Just learning the importance of framing differently can make a profound change in your own thinking. Once you're aware of the power of your own words you'll know that even if the person you're dealing with isn't interested in understanding you or resolving the issues, you have done your best to be genuine and no longer have to beat up on yourself. You're thinking will be clearer in all your decisions and you can actually start to live a more positive life.

This was just what I needed. My original battery got to the point where it had to be on the charger almost all the time. I replaced out the battery and now it works like new. With that being said, compared to other baby monitors, this one does have a much shorter battery life. My little one takes 2 naps a day and I also use it a little bit in the morning and a little bit at night before I go to bed. I have to charge it at least twice.

Great book! It's educational, it should look like a college book, write in it, take notes, highlight and bookmark the book to death and it will work wonders in your life whether for business or personal! If you implement any part of this book it will change everything

About the Author
Kermit Lynch was born and raised in California. In 1972, he opened a retail wineshop and later began importing and distributing nationally. In 1988, he published Adventures on the Wine Route, which won the Veuve Clicquot Wine Book of the Year Award. His second book, Inspiring Thirst, was published in 2004. Lynch divides his time between Berkeley and Provence, where he lives with his wife, the photographer Gail Skoff, and their two children.
