About the Author
Aka Akasaka got his start as an assistant to Jinsei Kataoka and Kazuma Kondou, the creators of Deadman Wonderland. His first serialized manga was an adaptation of the light novel series Sayonara Piano Sonata, published by Kadokawa in 2011. Love is War but in this volume readers get to see other types of battles. The battles one must face to become better and battles of food!Girl Genius Kaguya Shinomiya is adorable in this volume!
Back to the regular battles, the war of love between Kaguya and Miyuki continues even in the summer vacation. As was shown in the earlier volume, Chika sort of ruined the possibility of them using her to plan a summer event that would have them all meeting together. However, between their avoidance of taking the first step, and Kaguya's strict upbringing, the chance to hang out is nearly ruined. Then there was also the case of Miyuki's birthday and them dancing around the fact that Kaguya knows it, but can't say that she wants to plan a party for him. This volume has raised, for the first time, the issue of Kaguya's parents' presence in her life, and how much autonomy she is allowed. I also feel it sort of contradicted with the earliest volumes, where she did a lot of things on her own, without being barred by her bodyguards? Unrelated to their battles in love, there is a chapter just about Chika catching the eye of a gourmand when she goes straight for ramen after getting back from her vacation. It was entertaining, even if that character was being snobbish & dismissive about young girls. Overall, another good installment.
Kaguya-sama has yet to have a bad volume. This one has great comedy and some sadness. Hayasaka has a fine chapter as she's trying to relax in the bath but Kaguya needs her computer expertise. Hayasaka suggests a Jeeves who has to deal with a smarter but still inept Bertie Wooster. We see Kaguya's family life and it is heartbreaking to realize how cold and remote her relatives are. When Kaguya is told she can't attend a fireworks festival for security reasons, she decides to take matters in her own hands and fans should love how that story ends. Naturally, there is more intellectual sparring between Kaguya and Miyuki, each trying to get the other to confess his/her romantic feelings first. Kaguya-sama has proven to be one of the best series I've discovered this year.
