Todd Lammle, Network + Study Guide, Fourth Edition, Exam N10-007.The reader’s opinion is this text is disorganized and difficult to follow. The information was not presented in a logical progression for the reader. Additional editing and reorganization could help make the text easier to follow. Furthermore, use of color and better use of charts could help increase interest and understanding.For instance, in Chapter one, Lammle says, “don’t stress about the devices hub and switch…trust me; I’ll describe them to you in much more detail in Chapter 5.†Then Lammle expects the reader to know what these devices are as reading continues. Lammle even refers to hubs, switches and routers in the Written Labs and Review Questions, but these devices are not fully defined till Chapter 5. The reader’s opinion is this type of organization makes it difficult to understand concepts presented.Another example of this is when Lammle explains Ethernet Cable descriptions in Chapter 3. “Here’s a common example: 100BaseX. The 100 tells us that the transmission speed is 100Mb, or 100 megabits. The X value can mean several different things; for example, a T is short for twisted pair.†Lammle then goes on to fully explain “Common Ethernet types†in Chapter 4; and exactly what the X value does mean in these cable types. If you want any chance in getting your cert..just get it, im no book reader..I prefer to search on the web when doing any type of work period..but this book isnt what you think, the information given to you is human to human..not dictionary to human.
To be clear, I am a Cisco certified engineer, but I ordered this book and the Mike Myers book for my nephew to help him study and get into the networking field. Having two sources of material allows for him to get multiple perspectives which is a good idea when starting out. The Network+ certification is a great place to start and this Lammle book is on point and very well written. I understand Cisco/Routing/Switching/Data Center/Wireless, so I found this book to be interesting and a great read, really nicely put together.First, it is laid out really well and has awesome bonus material to help prepare for the exam. The material is all there and in a functional outline that leads from core topic to core topic in a systematic way.Secondly, the writing style is phenomenal and easy to understand. I found it a great refresher for me, and the Subnetting section is incredible. Man, I wish I had this material when I began my career more years ago than I like to mention!I highly recommend this book by Lammle if you want to get into the Network field.Top notch!
Good study guide, textbook for my N+ community college course. Downgrade from 5 stars because the tone of the writing is a little chatty and colloquial.. fills a lot of pages unnecessarily and makes for excess historical/background story reading with very little take away. Other than that very comprehensive and well laid out by chapter. No color diagrams all b&w. Downgraded from 4 stars to 3 stars because if you use an envelope as a bookmark the pages fall out! VERY CHEAPLY BOUND.
I bought this book along with other resources to pass the Network+ exam. This book might be good for a seasoned professional that knows the in and outs of networking but for someone starting off you should definitely look elsewhere because it lacks in detailed explanations of networking concepts.
